Challenges of Brush Management Treatment Effectiveness in Southern Great Plains, United States

چکیده
Woodland expansion is a global challenge documented under varying degrees of disturbance, climate, and land ownership patterns. In North American rangelands, mechanical chemical brush management practices prescribed fire are frequently promoted by agencies used private landowners to reduce woody plant cover. We assess the distribution agency-supported cost sharing (2000−2017) in southern Great Plains, United States, evaluate longevity treatment application. test general expectation that current paradigm Plains reduces plants conserves rangeland resources at broad scales. This study represents most comprehensive assessment following linking confidential lands data national inventory program (US Department Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service National Inventory). observed regional differences types techniques cost-sharing programs throughout area. Mechanical was common practice shared Texas, while mixture application Oklahoma. Prescribed Kansas with some areas receiving treatment. Our analysis showed management, as implemented, did not tree cover long term minimally reduced shrub Evidence support only existed local site-level scales (40- 50-acre area), but effectiveness short-lived. At scales, changes little no overall net reduction from 2000 2017. These findings bring into question philosophy paradigm, its implementation default conservation practice, prioritization over alternative prevent new establishment enhance resilience rangelands region.

GHG Mitigation Potential of Different Grazing Strategies in the United States Southern Great Plains
The possibility of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by ruminants using improved grazing is investigated by estimating GHG emissions for cow-calf farms under light continuous (LC), heavy continuous (HC) and rotational grazing, also known as multi-paddock (MP), management strategies in Southern Great Plain (SGP) using life cycle assessment (LCA). Our results indicated a GHG emission with t...

Limited availability of herbage during the cool season creates a problem of a supply of nutrients for livestock producers throughout the southern Great Plains of the USA and, particularly, on small farms where resource constraints limit possible mitigating strategies. Six coolseason grasses were individually sown into clean-tilled ground, no-till drilled into stubble of Korean lespedeza [Kummer...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Severe Hail Swaths in the Southern Plains of the United States
Severe hail is a common event in the Southern Plains of the United States. However, few studies have been conducted to quantitatively answer the question: how much hail occurs at any given location? Given the coverage of WSR-88D radars over the Southern Plains and recent technological advancements including hail detection algorithms, a compilation of severe hail swaths was completed for the per...
